WSUS stopped delivering WIn10 Upgrade 1511 after 1607 release

Hi all!

We have a strange Problem.

We are running a WSUS Server on Server 2012 (not R2), patched it with everything neccessary to deliver Windows 10 Upgrades and it worked until a few days ago(time 1607 was released?). We were able to update about 150 of our 200 Windows 10 Build 10240 boxes of our customers to 1511 before, but now, no 10240 machine get´s the 1511 (May Edition) offered by WSUS.

Then i started searhing and came across KB3159706.

First I thought, that it can´t be because it describes 1607 Upgrade and future ones and other packages using ESD. But I gave it a try and followed the Instructions. It worked perfectly as described, but does not resolve the Issue, that 1511 will not be offerred any more.

Now I tried to install a new 2016TP5 based WSUS, to ensure it is not a issue with 2012 WSUS 3.0 SP2 (and Patches), but 2016TP5 WSUS does the same Thing. Then i stumbled over a comment, that 2016 Server WSUS will have KB3159706 Features when it goes RTM, so there is the possibility, that it does not have KB3159706 yet in TP5.

Here our configuration:

* WSUS 3.0 SP2, all Patches on 2012 Server (in Azure)
* Configured to not deliver packages directly, Clients have to download themfrom Microsoft (this could be important, because ESD Packages will only be downloaded by CLients not by the WSUS - So what could KB3159706 do on the Server without the ESDs to look in?

What I found interesting so far:

* WSUS marks the previously already working 1511 Upgrade Updates now as "Not Applicable" to the 10240 Clients - thats strange
* When  I Change Test Clients Windows Update Agent to Microsoft Windows Update directly, the 1511 is ovvered instantly, so there is no issue withe the Clients!
* The WSUS Update ID of the correct 1511 Upgrade Update is other than this offered by Windows Update
WSUS knows the March Version with ID:d08ff53d-ce46-4ad1-8abe-538fd192e38f
WSUS knows the May Version we approved, but is not offered anymore with ID: 1105b447-525e-4192-ba5e-437cbd6c01aa
Windows Update offers a new (!) Update ID: Upgrade auf Windows 10 Pro, Version 1511, 10586 | 468e4ed0-ee60-4827-9e45-370e77dec143

So, what is going on here? Is it all because of a bug or because we are only Control our Clients with the WSUS, but they have to download directly? Does it have anything to do with 1607 release or KB3159706?

Help please - I invested days already to hunt this down...

Thanks a lot

Thomas

WSUS Post Install Fails: "Fatal Error: The system cannot find the path specified."

I had to re-install WSUS 3.0 on our Win2012 Standard server yesterday and I've been trying for over 24 hours to get this done. However, Post Install never completes, stating it cannot find the specified path. The log file states this:

2016-09-20 14:27:08  Postinstall started
2016-09-20 14:27:08  Detected role services: Api, UI, WidDatabase, Services
2016-09-20 14:27:08  Start: LoadSettingsFromXml
2016-09-20 14:27:08  Start: GetConfigValue with filename=UpdateServices-Services.xml item=ContentLocal
2016-09-20 14:27:08  Config file did not contain a value "ContentLocal"
2016-09-20 14:27:08  Microsoft.UpdateServices.Administration.CommandException: A required configuration value was not found in the system. This is usually caused by installing WSUS through PowerShell and not specifying a configuration file. Review the article Managing WSUS Using PowerShell at TechNet Library (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=235499) for more information on the recommended steps to perform WSUS installation using PowerShell.
   at Microsoft.UpdateServices.Administration.PostInstall.GetConfigValue(String filename, String item)
   at Microsoft.UpdateServices.Administration.PostInstall.LoadSettingsFromXml()
   at Microsoft.UpdateServices.Administration.PostInstall.Execute(String[] arguments)

That seems kind of obvious, doesn't it? Just edit the file "UpdateServices-Services.xml" with the correct information, as per many of the posts I have read. However, I have done that MULTIPLE TIMES, and I still get this same error! Here is what I have in my UpdateServices-Services.xml file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?><INSTANCE CLASSNAME="ServerComponent_UpdateServices_Services"><PROPERTY NAME="ContentDirectory" TYPE="string"><VALUE>E:\WSUS</VALUE></PROPERTY><PROPERTY NAME="ContentLocal" TYPE="boolean"><VALUE>true</VALUE></PROPERTY></INSTANCE>

I've also tried it with quotes ("E:\WSUS"), trailing slash, double-back slashes. I've also removed WSUS from the server as well as IIS, and re-installed them both, but still getting same error. I really, REALLY need to get this fixed. Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Report Viewer Only Works On Computer-Based Reports

Greetings everyone,

I am using WSUS on Windows Server 2012 R2.  I have noticed that Report Viewer fails when generating reports that are based on an update.   When running reports based on a computer, Report Viewer displays a report.  When trying to run a report on an update, I receive a generic dialog "Error Generating Report: An error occurred while generating the report.  Try running the report again or contact your network administrator if the problem persists."  The event log shows the Report Viewer has experienced an "APPCRASH".

Has anybody experienced this before?  Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time!

Win10 edition not reported in WSUS console

We're running WSUS Version: 6.3.9600.18228. Win10 appears in the Operating System column as "Windows (Version 10.0)". Just wondering why the edition isn't appearing the way it does for Windows 7 "Windows 7 Professional". Is this by design or do I need to update WSUS?

Thanks

Error Upgrading to 1607

Hello,

I am having an issue upgrading my PCs from 1511 to 1607 using WSUS. I have installed all required updates and followed all appropriate steps found here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3159706.  I have put the .esd file type in IIS. The clients are all failing with error code: (Unable to Find Resource:) ReportingEvent.Client.167; Parameters: Feature update to Windows 10 Pro, version 1607, en-us, Retail being reported on the WSUS server. I am running 2012 R2. Any help would be appreciated.

Move WSUS from 8R2 to 12R2 - SQL Connect Error

$

On a 2008R2 Domain, Im getting an SQL error moving WSUS from a 2008R2 domain controller (its WSUS Server ver 3.2.7600.226 using Windows Internal Database) to a new 2012R2 standard Server (again using WID). Im at step 3.3 "Back up the WSUS database" of technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh852349. Ive installed SQL Server Management Studio release 16.3 on the 12R2 but cant connect from it to the database on either the old or new server.

(to add to the fun, SQL Server Management Studio release 16.3 wont install on 2008R2; I "run as admin", accept the UAC prompt, and nothing else happens.)

Anyway, on 12R2, at "Connect to (SQL) Server", server type says Database Engine, I enter the server name, hit Connect, errors after a few secs with:
"Cannot connect to SERVERNEW.
------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft%20SQL%20Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=2&LinkId=20476
------------------------------
The system cannot find the file specified."

If I "Browse for more" (servers to connect to), no Local Servers are shown. Network Servers shows "Database Engine" & both the 2012R2 & 2008R2 WSUS Server names under it, but "connect" gives the exact same previous error, in both cases.

Ive searched web but it all seems to be about SQL Server proper, not WID ("is the SQL Server service running?" no, dont have that; "Windows Internal Database" & "Windows Internal Database VSS Writer" services are running on 2012 & "Windows Internal Database" on 8R2). Dont know how to check if "SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections" since dont know how to access WID.

Thanks so much. Id love to complete this migration.

Cannot update Windows 10 Pro computers from 10240 to 1607 from WSUS

Hello, I have problem to update company computers (about 300) from Windows 10 Pro build version 10240 (installed version) to newest Windows 10 anniversary update 1607. Updates are delivered from our WSUS server (Windows Server 2012 R2) with latest updates and all computers are set (via GPO) to download and install updates from wsus (and wait for reboot). I approved updates to 1607 (KB3176936) and when I check for updates on computers I get option to download and install "Feature update to Windows 10 Pro, version 1607, en-us, Retail", but after couple minutes of download and install I get error message:

There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help:

Retry

After this may help: isn't any error code or anything.

1607 Upgrade not working. Downloaded updates before applying KB3159706

Hi,

Yesterday I approved education and enterprise 1607 upgrades on my WSUS before applying KB3159706.  They downloaded to WSUS and the clients ok but I had an install error on my (1511) test clients.  I was getting:

Feature update to Windows 10 Enterprise, version 1607, en-us - Error 0x80240031

I also got error 0xc1800118 on an education edition i was testing on.

At this point I read the WSUS blog and realized I needed KB3159706.

I declined the updates on WSUS and ran the cleanup wizard which removed the 1607 downloads.  I then applied KB3159706 and performed all of the manual steps. I re-approved and downloaded the updates.  On the clients I stopped windows updates service and cleared out C:\windows\softwaredistribution then restarted the service.  I then received the following error on my enterprise and education clients:

Feature update to Windows 10 Enterprise, version 1607, en-us - Error 0xc1800118

Will downloading the 1607 upgrades before applying KB3159706 give me this issue?  Please advise how to rectify.

My WSUS server is correctly patched to download and distribute 1511 and has been doing for some time.  Just having issues with 1607.

Cheers,

Steve

Fails to upgrade clients to Windows 10 (1607)

I asked this question in the Configmgr forum, but might have better luck here, as I read it's more of a WSUS issue.

The Windows 10 anniversary update fails to install my test clients (Windows 10 1511).

WUHandler.log give me this error:

Installation job encountered some failures. Error = 0x80240022. Commit Result = 0x00000001.

C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log , tells me this for the update:

Remapping missing decrypt key error [0xC1800118] -> [0x80248008]

I have upgraded our site server (Windows 2012, also our Software update point. Seperate WSUS not used for clients), with the latest version(1606) applied, and the KB3159706 patch with the manual steps as described by MS

Some more drastic measures to mend this is described in this blog, but I'd rather see some official fix or comment on this.

Any suggestions?

But computers not added in this group.

Windows Server 2012 R2 fatal error 0x800b0109 on selftupdate\wuident.cab

We have 1 Windows Server 2012 R2 server that isn't communicating with our internal Windows Update server, or Microsoft's Windows Update Server.

Getting the fatal error: 0x800B0109 when verifying trust for c:\windows\softwaredistribution\selfupdate\wuident.cab.  Copied the file from another server, and installed the certificates for the digital signature, but still get the same error.

WSUS Console Crash

Since I installed the newest Updates on my Windows 2012-Server, the WSUS-Console crashes as I try to list all updates. This is the error:

I already deleted C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\MMC\wsus. I had that error before, so I restored my machine completely. Then I installed all available Windows-Updates (see list on Screenshot), error occurs again. I tried to uninstall all of them, problem is still here. So I have to restore my machine again and deny all updates...

I am not sure whether I also have to deny all new updates to the whole company. Is Microsoft aware of that problem?

WSUS Reports KB3061064 for All Computers

Sometime this summer, my WSUS server started reporting that KB3061064 (Update Rollup for Skype for Business Server 2015, SmartSetup) was needed for every computer in my organization, which is about 20 including servers and workstations. We do not have a Skype server in our organization, so I thought it was also an update for clients and went ahead and approved it for clients. None of them needed the update. I hesitated to approve it for our servers, but eventually did to see what would happen. Even though WSUS reported it as needed, None of our servers listed it when it checked for updates when I ran Windows Update manually. It looks like WSUS is mistakenly reporting this update. Is anyone else seeing this?

Hi

I have installed WSUS on a Windows 2012 machine (a VM on 2008 R2 hyper-v).

I have followed this guide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cs2WCBmJt2c

It’s quote straight forward.

The updates are after they are syncronized approved for installation to unassigned and all computers.

Then I have created the GPO for this and have following settings. The policy kicks when I looks at the settings on
the test clients (W7 SP1) but the clients can`t update, and no clients reports to
the WSUS server. I gets the error 80072EE5 on the clients that is that they can’t
access the update service location.

What can the problem be? The URL in the screen dump works, and I coming to the default
IIS 8 page when testing from the client.

Thanks

WSUS still uses port 8530 even 8531 (SSL) works fine

Hi,

we've setup one WSUS server and several downstream servers. Everything works pretty fine. We configured SSL on port 8531 and this works fine too.

Now I've seen in the firewall that the downstreamserver still connects to the upstreamserver via 8530 and not via 8531. But when I manually start a synchronization it works pretty fine via 8531.

Why are there still connections via 8530?

WSUS service failure and uninstall error 0x80070643

Hello

I recently had a drive fail in a RAID 1 array on a Windows Server 2008 Standard SP2 domain controller. The drive was replaced and the array successfully rebuilt the drive. Our domain comprises a Win2k8 DC (which WSUS is installed on), a W2k3 DC, a W2k8 Storage Server and various W2k, Win XP, Vista and W7 clients.

WSUS3 SP2 is installed on this computer and had been working fine. After the drive was rebuilt WSUS stopped working. WSUS is organised as follows:

The drive is divided into 3 partitions. C: contains the program files, D: contains the WSUS database and update files. E: is a system recovery partition.

After the drive was rebuilt I had a problem connecting to the WSUS console. I am logged on using the domain administrator account. I restarted the server last night in the hope that it would solve this issue. After restarting, the problem persists. When I start Windows Server Update Services from Administrative Tools the centre pane shows a large red X and 'Error: Connection Error'. The option to 'Reset Server Node' results in the same error. The error, available from 'Copy Error to Clipboard' is:

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.

Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error. This may be a transient error; try restarting the administration console. If this error persists,

Try removing the persisted preferences for the console by deleting the wsus file under %appdata%\Microsoft\MMC\.

The event logs show that the Update Services service started 7mins after the server was restarted. This is immediately followed by an event stating the Windows Update service had started. If fails soon after and is restared automatically twice to try to recover from the failure. 12 hours after the restart the Update Services service is still not running. It is set to Automatic (Delayed Start). The service is set to logon as 'Network Service'. The service can be manually started, but 'Resert Server Node' again results in the same error. After 4mins the service will stop. Event 7034 is logged:

IIS and SQL are running fine as far as I am aware. I also have Sophos Enterprise Console installed which uses SQL to store it's data and that is working fine.

After a bit of searching around the 'net I thought the easiest solution would be to uninstall WSUS, leave the database and update files in place and then re-install. I ran the uninstallation procedure from the Server Manager, but because the service is not running, and even after starting the service, uninstallation fails:

Windows Server Update Services: Removal failed
Error: Attempt to un-install Windows Server Update Services failed with error code 0x80070643.  Fatal error during installation

I saw a reference to the online article located here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/sus/archive/2008/11/05/how-to-manually-remove-all-of-wsus.aspx but the article states it is out of date and I did not want to make a bad situation worse by following the instructions.

Can anyone help me with this, please. Ideally, I would like to be able to keep the updates as downloading them again will consume a substantial amount of our monthly allowance. However, if the best thing is to remove the entire installation, then I will ahppily go with that, too.

Thanks.

Anyone can explain why Windows 10 1607 client can't download WSUS updates ?

WSUS is install on Windows Server 2012 R2 Server.

When a Windows 10 client detect a Windows 10 (1607 only) update on WSUS, client can't download every update ( Windows or other)

If there are only Office update everything works good.
