New Replica Downstream Server, synced, has No Computers

I'm moving WSUS from 2008R2 to 2012R2, & am now using the procedure Anne suggested to me: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/098abfc4-6ed6-4700-bda5-f83acdc1cf71/move-wsus-from-8r2-to-12r2-sql-connect-error?forum=winserverwsus

The procedure is elaborated a little here: https://thwack.solarwinds.com/thread/64229

12R2 is set as a Replica Downstream server & it has succeeded in syncing with the upstream 8R2 WSUS. So 12R2 WSUS has thousands of Updates, & lists our five Computer groups - but All Computers & also our five Computer groups, are not populated, we have "0 computers". I haven't yet redone the GPO to point clients to the new server, but I still would have thought that as a "Replica" the new one would have picked up the computer details.

Thanks

Move WSUS from 8R2 to 12R2 - SQL Connect Error

$

On a 2008R2 Domain, Im getting an SQL error moving WSUS from a 2008R2 domain controller (its WSUS Server ver 3.2.7600.226 using Windows Internal Database) to a new 2012R2 standard Server (again using WID). Im at step 3.3 "Back up the WSUS database" of technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh852349. Ive installed SQL Server Management Studio release 16.3 on the 12R2 but cant connect from it to the database on either the old or new server.

(to add to the fun, SQL Server Management Studio release 16.3 wont install on 2008R2; I "run as admin", accept the UAC prompt, and nothing else happens.)

Anyway, on 12R2, at "Connect to (SQL) Server", server type says Database Engine, I enter the server name, hit Connect, errors after a few secs with:
"Cannot connect to SERVERNEW.
------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft%20SQL%20Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=2&LinkId=20476
------------------------------
The system cannot find the file specified."

If I "Browse for more" (servers to connect to), no Local Servers are shown. Network Servers shows "Database Engine" & both the 2012R2 & 2008R2 WSUS Server names under it, but "connect" gives the exact same previous error, in both cases.

Ive searched web but it all seems to be about SQL Server proper, not WID ("is the SQL Server service running?" no, dont have that; "Windows Internal Database" & "Windows Internal Database VSS Writer" services are running on 2012 & "Windows Internal Database" on 8R2). Dont know how to check if "SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections" since dont know how to access WID.

Thanks so much. Id love to complete this migration.

WSUS Administrations console - Reset Server Node

Hi, I am getting Error: Connection Error in two of the WSUS servers. Normally a couple of restarts usaully gets me the console from the server, or by connecting to the WSUS server from other WSUS Update Service consoles. But for the last two/three days I am not able to do that. I checked the Application logs in the server after a reboot of the server. After about 10 min's of a restart, the servers come up with the following Even ID.

13042: Self-update is not working.

12002: The Reporting Web Service is not working.

12012: The API Remoting Web Service is not working.

12032: The Server Synchronization Web Service is not working.

12022: The Client Web Service is not working.

12042: The SimpleAuth Web Service is not working.

12052: The DSS Authentication Web Service is not working.

12072: The WSUS content directory is not accessible.
System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (503) Server Unavailable.
   at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse()
   at Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal.HealthMonitoring.HmtWebServices.CheckContentDirWebAccess(EventLoggingType type, HealthEventLogger logger)

Any idea how I can go back to not having all these errors and hopefully connect to the console?

Offline/disconnected WSUS errors

$

I have been dealing with this issue for months.  I have read (I believe) every article on the internet on how to fix this, but to no avail.

I have an online WSUS server and an offline one I have created.  The online one is a downstream I created off of a bigger offline network.  My downstream server works fine.  I am still using Windows 2k8R2.  I have followed the Technet guide, but I cannot figure this issue out on getting the offline wsus server to work.  I robocopy the contents of wsuscontent folder over to the same path on the offline server.  I import the metadata, but for some reason, it will only download part of the updates.   It stops at about 230 megabytes with 40+ gig to go.  I have made sure I am only using English.  I have tried express files on and off. I have uninstalled and reinstalled IIS, the internal database and wsus several times.  This is wsus 3.0 sp2 with the three Wsus patches up through 2828150.

The only error I can find is error 10032, which is annoyingly very ambiguous and unhelpful.  I list the bits queue and it is always empty.  I get the dreaded"The files for this update have not yet been downloaded. Theupdate can be approved but will not be available to computers until the download".  I have imported over the weekend several times and by Monday it doesn't go past about 200 MB.  Everytime I rebuild, it varies a little bit but always stops around 200-240MB.

I have verified the file permissions and I am getting some of the downloads.  I have verified that the files are actually there by checking the file information in Wsus, but it insists it must download files that are there.   I have gone as far as giving network serivce full control of the entire volume and making sure it's inherited.  I removed and reapplied the Wsus admin group to make sure the ACLs are fine. I have heard some say that it's because of agreeing to the licenses for certain downloads, but when I approve them, I get the option to agree.  So I am at a lost as to where to go.

softwaredistribution.log gives one or two warnings, but I don't see any errors.  I am at my wits end.  Please assist!

We have SCCM 2012 R2 with WSUS enabled on Windows 2012. SUSDB was WID but I migrated this to a remote sql 2012 cluster.

After applying KB3159706 and following the manual steps WSUS cannot start. Opening the console I get the error:

The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error. This may be a transient error; try restarting the administration console. If this error persists,

Try removing the persisted preferences for the console by deleting the wsus file under %appdata%\Microsoft\MMC\.

System.IndexOutOfRangeException -- Index was outside the bounds of the array.

Hello Everybody,

after installing two time a WSUS at a Windows Server 2012 R2 and hours of research, I would like to ask for help.

So what I have done:

  • Installing Windows Server 2012 R2 this server is in our DMZ, so I opened http und Https for syncing with Windows Update and Port 8530 and 8531 for the clients
  • Installing all Updates
  • Installing the WSUS Features here I added at the Point .Net framework HTTP Activation for the manual post installation steps after installing KB3159706. I also added .Net Framework Features für Report Viewer 2008.
  • I use the WID Database
  • Install all updates for WSUS and do the post installation steps for KB3159706
  • Than I bought a certificate and secure the server with ssl using http://www.wsus.de/de/HowTo/Kommunikation-zwischen-WSUS-und-Clients-mit-SSL-verschluesseln without ca (I bought one).
  • Yes after that I restarted IIS and the server
After that I got many errors
  • The Client Web Service is not working.
  • The API Remoting Web Service is not working.
  • The DSS Authentication Web Service is not working.
  • The SimpleAuth Web Service is not working.

and last but not least:

  • Content file download failed.
    Reason: CRC verification failure.

Windows 10 1607 stuck 0% trying to download from WSUS for any update

Hi All,

I am sure this is part of the ongoing issues with WSUS and Windows 10 1607, however perhaps someone could clarify this for me.

I have applied the patches and run the post installation task as detailed in a number of posts on various forums.

Today we are stuck with:

Updates are available.

• Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2 x64 Edition - September 2016 (KB890830).

Downloading updates 0%

I am getting this with any and all updates coming out from WSUS to my Windows 10 clients.

Thoughts would be appreciated as to how to remedy this.

Thanks

Craig

Critical Tenable Scan finding against WSUS Windows Internal Database on Server 2008 R2

I receive weekly scans from the client who uses a Tenable (Nessus) scanner and this week's finding included a CRITICAL finding against the WSUS' Windows Internal Database which is installed on a 2008 R2 Datacenter server.  The finding is as follows:

"Plugin Output:

The following unsupported installations of Microsoft SQL Server were
detected :

  Installed version         : 9.00.5000.00 (2005 SP4 (KB 2463332)) Windows Internal Database (64-bit)
Minimum supported version : This version is no longer supported."

Yet when I search for an update the latest version I can find is the one currently installed.  Has this version of Windows Internal Database reached its EOL?  If so, when will Microsoft release an update for the Windows Internal Database that can be applied to the server?

Windows 2012 WSUS - BITS Queue

We are running WSUS Server on a Windows 2012 server and the updates download are very slow.

Looking the BITS queue there are 10 Jobs but only the first is in Transferring state, all the other 9 are in Queued state.

The download speed is between 5KB and 6KB, even when there are ~5Mbps bandwidth available which is 95% of the time.

If I set BITS to foreground mode the download uses all the bandwidth available 10Mbps and all 10 Jobs are in Transferring state.

I can't let BITS in foreground mode because it takes all the bandwidth available and all the others applications experiences network problems.

Why BITS in background mode not using more than one jobs at the same time to speed up the download when there is available bandwidth? This is a brand new server and it was left in the default configuration as the others WSUS we have in other sites.

Is there something WSUS needs to allow several Jobs in background mode? Protocol? Ports? The WSUS server is behind a CheckPoint firewall, but all the others WSUS in other sites allso are.

Thanks

WSUS Server 2012 - Unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API

Hey guys,

So I've installed WSUS on a Server 2012 virtual server. It all works great and pushes updates through GPO to a test OU on the domain.

When I went live with it and enabled it on the whole domain, the console works for about 3 minutes and then I lose connection! Restarting the machine makes it work for another few minutes and then i get the same error.

Reseting server node doesn't do anything and this is what the error log shows:

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.

Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

System.Net.WebException -- The request failed with HTTP status 503: Service Unavailable.

SCCM client Not receiving updates

I'm trying to test out a new SCCM environment I created, SCCM 2012. Some software updates will be sent to the client computer, whereas other updates will not. This includes applications as well.

I am able to send Google Chrome to a client, as well as some MS Windows 7 software updates. However, when I try to send a whole package it doesn't receive on the user end.

When I look at LocationServices.log I receive the following errors:

<![LOG[Could not load logging configuration for component ClientLocation. Using default values.]LOG]!><time="16:30:56.310+420" date="09-19-2016" component="LocationServices" context="" type="2" thread="3556" file="stdlogging.cpp:480">

Anyone know where I should start looking to resolve this issue?

Cannot connect to WSUS server

Hello

I am unable to use the WSUS MMC snap-in to remotely manage my WSUS server. It used to work and I don't know what may have changed to cause it to stop working.

The full error message:

"Cannot connect to <wsus hostname> Please make sure the post-installation task is completed successfully in that server. If it was, please verify if the server is using another port or different SSL setting."

I haven't enabled SSL.

I normally use port 8530, which I've checked is accessible from my client PC.

The WSUS console works fine if I RDP to the server.

Tried MMC from Win 7 and Win 10, problem affects both machines.

I can connect fine to a downstream WSUS server using the MMC.

WSUS is version 6.2.9200.17025 on a 2012 VM.

Clients getting updates fine.

Any advice much appreciated.

How should the WSUS server be configured

Hi all,

I have a server that is the WSUS server for the environment.

I am wondering how it should be configured? Should it be included in the GPO that all the other servers are included in? For example, should its update settings be configured by the WSUS gpo or should its update settings be manually configured in control> panel > windows update?

I have no doubt about other devices, for example they will be added to the gpo called windows update which controls the updates for all devices on the network, but with this server being the actual WSUS server I am not sure what to do.

Thanks

Hi,

I have a rather nasty problem that i cannot seem to solve. As of now I spent a whopping 2 days of work but I simply cannot get this to work:

My setup:

- A Windows Server 2012 R2 as Domain Controller with WSUS role installed (made it DC to have a CA and issue proper certifcates)
- All clients are servers (2008, 2012 R2) and NOT in the domain (customer machines, not possible)
- WSUS Settings on Clients are configured manually via registry key.
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate)
- Communication to WSUS Server without SSL on the default port 8530 works fine.
- Opening the https:// URLs on clients works just fine

Now, I have to use SSL with WSUS since it is a security police here, but can't get it to work and after hours of searching can't seem to find a solution, since everybody who has this error seems to have just misconfigured the server url (missing the port). I did not.

I set up everything using this guide http://jackstromberg.com/2013/11/enabling-ssl-on-windows-server-update-services-wsus/ (except the GPO part since clients are not in the domain)

I post the log file at the end but the weird thing is it tells me it cannot connect to https://FQDN_of_WSUS_Server:8531/SimpleAuthWebService/SimpleAuth.asmx but when I open that URL in the internet explorer it works just fine, without certificate warning or anything.

So why do I get this error on all clients :(

WSUS 2012 R2 - Windows 10 Anniversary Update failing to install with error 0x8024200D

Hi Guys,

I am having trouble pushing the AU to my Windows 10 clients from WSUS on Windows Server 2012 R2.

When the Windows 10 client does a check for updates, it sees the "Feature Update to Windows 10 Pro, version 1607, en-gb", but then returns a message that states:

"There were problems installing some updates, butwe'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help:"

It does not give an error code on the update page itself, but looking in event viewer, I see an event as per the below:

Error, Event ID 20, Category - Windows Update Agent.

Text: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8024200D: Feature update to Windows 10 Pro, version 1607, en-gb

Can anyone advise what this means? I installed the WSUS hotfix to allow it to work with Windows 10 updates, and ran the manual servicing operation that was involved. Is this related to the IIS mime types?

Appreciate any advice you can offer.

Cheers, Eds
