WSUS console & service can't start. "Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database 'SUSDB'"

Our WSUS server (Windows Server 2012 R2) hanged when it was installing updates on itself. I rebooted it in a harsh way, it started normally and finished installing the updates. However, now I can't start the WSUS management console due to a connection error. The WSUS server service itself doesn't start as well.

The Application server contains multiple events 18456, source MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID, message "Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database 'SUSDB'. [CLIENT: <named pipe>]" If I try to connect to the server using SQL Server Management Studio, it displays the following error:

"Cannot connect to \\.\pipe\MICROSOFT##WID\tsql\query. Login failed for user 'MY-LOGIN'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456)"

The Application even log contains the same event mentioned above, only the message is different: "Login failed for user 'MY-LOGIN'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT:<named pipe>]".

If I restart the Windows Internal Database service, it starts normally and doesn't throw any errors in the Application log. Among other things, it successfully mounts the SUSDB database. No other errors (including DCOM errors) can be found in the log.

Seems that security setting on the WID engine are damaged. Any ideas how to fix them? Besides reinstalling the server, of course? :)

Hello,

I have installed successfully an update NDP35SP1-KB2836940-x86 on a windows server 2003 32bit, However when i look at the add/remove program (show updates ticked) I could not find this update under the .NET 3.5 SP1

Add / Remove list

I also issued a cmd command

wmic qfe list brief /format:htable > "%USERPROFILE%\hotfix.html"

But could not find the KB being listed in there..

Any ideas?

Broken WSUS (2012 R2) - Downloads stuck

Hi All,

I’m really struggling to get my WSUS server to work after moving from a Server 2008 box. Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

This is a project which I have had to put on hold for the last week or two, but due to the feature updates from Windows 10 I would like to push forward and iron out these issues.

What I’ve done

      •       Deployed WSUS roles on server 2012
      •       Configured WSUS exactly the same as our previous system
      •       Resolved an issue with NETWORK SERVICE permissions within the WSUS content drive
      •       Resolved an update file download issue by changing the port from 8530 to 80
      •       Identified that all client updates fail since the port change was made
      •       Removed WSUS server role and reinstalled *(Maybe I should cleanly install the server??)*

I do not have the permission to re-deploy the server until my supervisor returns.

    1.       Re-installed WSUS, reconfigured, left on port 8530

Installed all applicable Windows updates Manual steps completed:

    1. Open an elevated Command Prompt window, and then run "C:\Program Files\Update Services\Tools\wsusutil.exe postinstall /servicing" (case sensitive, assume C: as the system volume).
    2. Select HTTP Activation under .NET Framework 4.5 Features in the Server Manager Add Roles and Features wizard.
        • Restart the WSUS service.

        Still not working..

        Here are my event logs:

WSUS Server 2012 - Unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API

        Hey guys,

So I've installed WSUS on a Server 2012 virtual server. It all works great and pushes updates through GPO to a test OU on the domain.

When I went live with it and enabled it on the whole domain, the console works for about 3 minutes and then I lose connection! Restarting the machine makes it work for another few minutes and then i get the same error.

Reseting server node doesn't do anything and this is what the error log shows:

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.

Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

        Greetings,

One of our WAN guys wants to monitor network bandwidth being used between the WSUS server and the clients.  When he asked me what protocols WSUS used, I know that the clients use HTTP when communicating with the server, however, I am not sure if there are any others.

Could someone please tell me if HTTP is the only protocol being used, or are there other protocols being used when clients do downloads from the WSUS server?

        Thanks.

I need to install MS DOT NET FRAMEWORKS 4.6 on all our workstations and servers. Can you advise if this can we done from WSUS as when I look at the products I do not see anything in there for DOTNET FRAMEWORKS 4.6 installation files that I can enable so it will push via windows updates onto all workstations.

If this is possible where do I go to enable the feature. WHat KB # would this software be for windows server 2012 R2 and Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

We are trying to run a batch file using a third party application. When the third party application runs it comes up with a message a program running on this computer is trying to display a message which is coming from Interactive Services Detection.

How can I get the software to always be able to run the batch file successfully using schedule task so this window does not come up every time.

If I disable Interactive Services Detection service the third party application does not run

New WSUS server not pushing/installing updates

        Hi,

I have a new WSUS server (2012 R2 - WSUS 6.3.9600.18324) which I've set up and done all of the necessary configuration steps such as:

        • Installed KB3095113 and KB3159706 (including post-install steps)
        • Applied full-control permissions to the following directories:
          • %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Temporary ASP.NET Files
          • %windir%\Temp

We have a WSUS GPO configured to push approved updates at 9:00am every day (4 – Auto download and schedule the install.) This GPO works perfectly well with our previous WSUS server running Server 2008 R2. We use server-side targeting as we are a medium sized company of approx 75 client laptops.

I am having no problems navigating throughout the WSUS console, no problems with nightly syncronization - all updates are syncing properly. WSUS event logs also report no problems, “WSUS is working correctly”. So basically on the surface all looks good.

Last night I approved updates to a test target group consisting of 6 client laptops. As this was the first update approval there were approx 8K updates to approve. All updates approved successfully with no errors.

The problem I’m having is that none of the machines in the test group were updated this morning at 9:00am or since. I’ve uploaded two of the test machine WindowsUpdate.log files for review:

We have 1 Windows Server 2012 R2 server that isn't communicating with our internal Windows Update server, or Microsoft's Windows Update Server.

Getting the fatal error: 0x800B0109 when verifying trust for c:\windows\softwaredistribution\selfupdate\wuident.cab.  Copied the file from another server, and installed the certificates for the digital signature, but still get the same error.

Windows Server Update Services error event 10052, but test mail works

        Greetings!

Recently I've been seeing Windows Server Update Services event 10052 (can't send email notifications) errors in our WSUS server application log. This error means that WSUS is unable to send Windows update notification information and the like via e-mail, and yes, I have not received such mail from the WSUS server for a while.

However, the thing that I do not understand is that I can send and receive test mail from the WSUS server just fine. This means that it is likely that problem does not lie with the SMTP server or network, but rather with the WSUS server itself. Also, Windows update programs were applied to the server in question somewhat recently, so that may have something to do with it.

So this is all very strange. Does anybody have any ideas as to what is going on?

Hi!  We have a single Wsus Server on premises in our Company.

Recently i've come across the problem of WSUS not synchronizing properly. Following the suggestions in this thread, all is working as expected again.

        http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverwsus/thread/79f76bdf-83cc-47d1-8244-5d544fe7d21

Sadly the Wsus Snap in ins showing me 2 identical entries for the same Wsus server (all settings, updates lists etc)

did i miss something? I've already deleted the redundant entries in the Console and i checked the SSL bindings on the IIS.(all seems like before)

But when i open the Console again, it still presents me with :

        Update Services

        + fqdn(.local)

        + fqdn(.local)

        thx in advance

        Hello.

I have two questions that I can't seem to find answers to on the 'net.

        1. In WSUS in the "Updates" section; there is a classification called "WSUS Updates." What type of updates go into that classification and what are they used for.

        WSUS Updates

        2. Maybe this is related to question #1, but what is the best way to make WSUS update itself and how would you go about making WSUSnot update itself?

I've been searching for a couple days and I think the subject matter has too general of terms to return the correct search results.

        Hi All,

Now that the challenge to deploy WSUS has finally been completed, I'm looking into setting up SSL for WSUS (but nothing is every that straight forward).

So here's how far I've got with instructions:

        1. Login WSUS > Go to IIS Manager
        2. Click Server certificates and create domain certificate
        3. Entered distinguished name properties
        4. Attempted to select Online Certification authority but the "select" button was grayed out. - I have googled this, but I am a n00b with IIS..  Is this the correct method?

I've tried to do the things it tells me to do, but with no luck.

The only thing running on this server is WSUS service and my Kaspersky Security Center (SQL database), and that is not what is blocking the WSUS service (have checked). Im new to this forum and this is my first thread. I apologize if I do not mean the start requirements what I should minimum give you, of information.

        Best regards Kim (male) ;)

We have had this issue continually since KB3159706 was installed.

We did the post install tasks.

We created a brand new WSUS server, installed KB3159706, applied post install tasks and still have this issue.

WSUS 2012 R2 - Windows 10 Anniversary Update failing to install with error 0x8024200D

        Hi Guys,

I am having trouble pushing the AU to my Windows 10 clients from WSUS on Windows Server 2012 R2.

When the Windows 10 client does a check for updates, it sees the "Feature Update to Windows 10 Pro, version 1607, en-gb", but then returns a message that states:

"There were problems installing some updates, butwe'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help:"

It does not give an error code on the update page itself, but looking in event viewer, I see an event as per the below:

Error, Event ID 20, Category - Windows Update Agent.

Text: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8024200D: Feature update to Windows 10 Pro, version 1607, en-gb

Can anyone advise what this means? I installed the WSUS hotfix to allow it to work with Windows 10 updates, and ran the manual servicing operation that was involved. Is this related to the IIS mime types?

Appreciate any advice you can offer.

        Cheers, Eds

        Server 2012 R2

        WSUS

I am wondering how the 1607 build gets selected in my WSUS instance? I am not planning on moving to it until 1607 become more stable. But, I do want to be able to select/try it on a test machine via WSUS.

        How does it get selected?

Anyone can explain why Windows 10 1607 client can't download WSUS updates ?

WSUS is install on Windows Server 2012 R2 Server.

When a Windows 10 client detect a Windows 10 (1607 only) update on WSUS, client can't download every update ( Windows or other)

If there are only Office update everything works good.

        WSUS and BranchCache

For some reason I cannot get my head to understand how you can use BranchCache with WSUS on a 2012 R2 server, or at least the benefit of using it.

In a normal setup you have the main WSUS server with the downstream servers which pull the updates from the main server when they are approved. From what I have read it only pulls the updates that are needed at that location of the downstream server.

With BranchCache you would still have the main server with the downstream servers which again if I read this right pulls only the updates that are needed.

Correct me if I am wrong but you will still need the downstream servers with a database (whether it would be SQL or WID) and a place to store the updates (whether it would be local with the WSUS server or with BranchCache) so I am trying to figure out what the benefit would be with BranchCache.

I know I am missing something and most likely need to walk away and come back to it but I am hoping that someone can show me or produce a document on how to set this up and the benefits of it.

        Thank you,

        Tom
