Can't delete unused updates from WSUS console Cleanup Wizard

$

I'm trying to regain disk space by deselecting many unused products that were selected and then running the server cleanup wizard on Server 2016.

When running the cleanup wizard, I checked only the box to delete unused updates and update revisions, but it only runs for a few seconds and then the entire WSUS console crashes and says and error occurred trying to perform a database operation.

I have already run other options such as deleting expired and superceded updates and that worked, but I still can't delete unused updates and update revisions.

There is only one language selected and not that many products left selected after I removed the excess ones, yet the WSUSContent folder is still close to filling a 2TB drive.

How can I get past this issue?

WSUS Deployed on Windows Server 2016 - Windows 10 and 2016 clients no longer presented option to check for updates direct from Microsoft

Since we upgraded to Windows Server 2016 and the latest WSUS (3.2?) - we've noticed that we no longer have the ability to manually tell Windows 10x or Windows 2016 clients to look for updates from Microsoft.

Prior to this, by default, when you launch Windows Update, you'd be presented with check now option (which would look to the WSUS server). But there would be an option next to it that would say something along the lines of, "Check for updates from Microsoft Servers" - and when you chose that option, it skipped looking in WSUS and went direct to the update servers on Microsoft.

Since we've upgraded, that option to look directly to Microsoft's update servers has disappeared. I thought it may be that somehow the GPO changed or needed to be switched back from a new configuration - but nothing. I can't find any option to fix this in GPO, WSUS or anywhere else. The only work around I've found, is I have to disable the GPO policy for WSUS - at which point the client will then default back to looking at Microsoft.

We have times (especially with clients failing updates) where we want to point to the Microsoft Update server to verify if the installer is working or perhaps something in our WSUS is corrupt or something else. We REALLY want this option to return please - as once in a while, we'll find going direct solves the problem for that one client (saving hours of troubleshooting).

Thanks,
Shawn

Security monthly quality updates failing with error code 800F0831

On a Server 2012 R2 all the Security monthly updates have been failing to install since October 2016!

The Security only updates do install and so does Security update for IE.

I have tried downloading the updates and running locally to no avail.

This is happening on a few 2012 R2 Servers. I tried deleting Software Distribution folder and re-running Windows update to no avail.

I have checked the CBS.log for CBS_E_STORE_CORRUPTION and tried manually installing the KB it was referring to. This failed as well.

Recent Patches pushed using wsus not detecting in endpoints

I've been in a process of installing MS Updates in an environment which has never Patched till date.I use WSUS . Almost every time I'm successful except scenarios like below.

Few of my Server 2008 R2 Sp1 Standard machines which has never Patched till Date. Few days back I pushed all available Patches from 2013 till May 2018. My problem is this, Machine is detecting all relevant Patches except the updates released after Jan 2018.

So I had installed all detected updates and re-booted. Once Server has came up, I've given 'Check for Update' once again. But Server says 'Windows is up to date'.

I tried following so far.

1. Created new folder in WSUS and moved Server into that and approved Patches from Jan18-May18 into that folder

Note, I formatted the text to make it easier to read but it isn't being applied for some reason...

So in early February I was trying to get our system ready to do Windows 10 upgrades but after installing the updates on the server and enabling upgrades in SUP the clients stopped communicating with the server.  With not having too much time before February's updates I opted to just remove the monthly roll up I had applied and clients started communicating and updating again.  February patching went smooth.

Move forward to this month and our Test patching went well the weekend after patches were released.  After that weekend though things have gone downhill.  Clients have again stopped communicating with the server with the same error message in the windowsupdate.log which I've included here. >>

This time the server also has it's own issues  At the moment I'm unable to open WSUS.  I've restarted the WSUS IIS site, SQL is running and the WSUS service is running but it provides the following error:

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.

Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

I use the AdamJ's WSUS Automated Maintenance script to maintain the database.  Currently the database is only around 4gb.  If I try to run the script right now it fails to connect to the server.

To no surprise the WSUS syncing is not working:

I figured I would post here to see if I can get a resolution before I just remove WSUS along with the database and just reinstall.  Let me know if you have questions.

Hi,

We have got Server 2008 R2 servers and one Rollup update fail every month. It failed in June and failed again in July.

2018-07 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4338818)

Download size: 228.2 MB

Does anyone know why does it fail on our server?

Updates are not detected and installed according to deadlines after feature updates until a user logs on interactively. What does an interactive logon cause or change that makes the client resume?

Windows 10 Pro for Workstations - Not-Applicable (WSUS) for 1803 Feature Update

We've been battling an issue at our organization for several months now regarding Windows 10 Professional 1709 workstations not receiving the 1803 Feature Update that was released in early May 2018.  The main symptom of this issue is that these workstations are showing a status of "Not Applicable" for the 1803 Feature Update which has applied for other workstations.

We have identified that the only workstations exhibiting this behavior show an operating system name of "Windows 10 Pro for Workstations", as opposed to the other workstations' OS (which received 1803 through WSUS successfully) simply named "Windows 10 Pro".

Is there a separate set of instructions for servicing feature updates to Windows 10 Pro for Workstations through WSUS that we are missing?  These machines are receiving all other dynamic and cumulative updates without issue through WSUS, it is only the 1803 Feature Update that will not recognize as "needed".

Thank you,

Can't import patches into my WSUS server

I'm trying to patch all of the servers in one of my domains. The WSUS server hasn't automatically downloaded KB4057142, KB4057401 or KB4057402. I tried to manually import the patches and I get error: "This update cannot be imported into Windows Server Update Services, because it is not compatible with your version of WSUS." The version of WSUS I'm using is 10.0.14393.0.

I have another domain running WSUS version 6.3.9600.18694 and I was able to import these patches into it.

How do I get those patches on the other WSUS server?

Hello,

Trying to setup WSUS role on 2012R2. I have set it up with default config. When running the post installation task I get an error

I had already try these but still cannot fix it:
1. Turn off firewall and anti-virus
2. Uninstall IIS, WSUS and WID
3. Delete WSUS website in IIS

Any ideas?
Thanks

Windows update failing with error Code 80072F76

Hi,

Most of our windows server (2012R2 and 2008R2) are failing to search for update with error Code 80072F76. After couple of restart few of the server were able to search for the updates and install few of them however they are giving the same error after searching for the updates again.

I tried sfc/ scannow, Dism restorehealth(did fixed the component corruption on few machine), stopping the service > deleting the content of datastore and download under c:\windows\softwaredistribution > start the service. Still no go.

We use WSUS server for installing the updates.

Thanks.

WSUS syncs files, but never downloads

Hello,

OS: Windows Server 2016 Standard

I have installed WSUS according to this guideline:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows-server-update-services/deploy/1-install-the-wsus-server-role

I have approved the required updates, but I see this:

(forum doesn't allow me to include image or links)

In "Download status" I see: "Updates needing files; 224; Downloaded: 0.00Mb of 16,901.11 Mb".

SYSTEM account has full access to the WSUS data directory. Available disk space is far more than 16Gb. No piece of software blocks writing to that directory.

Where can I find directions - what to check - to make WSUS actually download the updates?
