WSUS-Clients not seen by server

This is on Windows server essentials 2016.

Server has Anywhere Access and WSUS installed and configured (along with DC...)

WSUS repository on second drive and Update Services installed on c:

Using GP to push down update policy to computers.

I have verified that GP is making changes on clients using rsop.  I have made several changes in see changes show up in the rsop viewer.

WSUS synchronizes with MS and updates are available.

I have tried to connect to WebServices/ClientWebServices/Client.asmx to test for connectivity via http://FQDN server:8530/WebServices/Client.asmx but it fails   (times out waiting for response).

I can navigate from client in run using \\fqdn server\Update Services\WebServices and can navigate into ClientWebService and copy the client.asmx and paste it to the client's local directory.  This tells me I have permissions to get there.

The issue seems to be that the http path is not being handle by IIS.  I am assuming this since the intranet setting in GP for Windows updates uses the http:\\ for the server and status server.  I can't find where that is in the config.

Is it a conflict with Anywhere Access?  I am really stuck on this.  Help....

can a WSUS 2012 R2 install be an autonomous downstream host to to an existing 2008 R2 WSUS 3.0 SP2 installation or does the upstream server's WSUS engine version have to match the downstream server?

Can I use WSUS 3.0 SP2 for Windows Server 2016 for updates.

I know it won't show the current version of those 2016 servers but but can they work for updates? What are the step need to take care to work on this senario.

WSUS (As SUP in SCCM) CPU / Memory High - Brand new installation, all recommended settings in place.

We have been fighting issues with WSUS for almost a year now.

We got so frustrated we spun up a new VM and installed everything from scratch.  Still we are consistently seeing 100% of all resources in use for days at a time.

Current specs on the WSUS Server itself: Server 2012 R2, 12gb RAM, quad core 2.4Ghz Xeon

This is fully patched with all the latest updates.  So all the previous hotfixes for previous high CPU issues appear to have been included in these hotfixes.

Database is on a separate server running SQL 2016.  The SQL server is not showing any issues or stress.

SCCM Site Server (which is on its own VM) is Build 1710.  We have ~29,000 endpoints, all on the local network.

IIS WSUS application pool is set with a Queue Length of 25,000, Failure interval 30, Maximum Failures 60, Private Memory 11010048 (just short of the systems maximum, we found it we put to unlimited that we then couldn't do anything to troubleshoot on the server as there were no more resources left).

I ran "exec spGetObsoleteUpdatesToCleanup" on the SQL server and it found none.  Its a brand new database so we wouldn't expect to have much clutter at all at this point.

Last time I opened a support case on this MS simply said to throw more resources at it.  Our VM Infrastructure Admins are resistant to do so because in their opinion it shouldn't be necessary and Microsoft's own documentation for WSUS indicates it shouldn't be either.

What else can we try?  Has anyone else come across this at all?  When looking at number of current connections to the server it can vary between 40-4,000 at a time.  I have found that even when the connections dropped to ~40 we were still seeing 100% CPU utilization.

Let me know if any additional configuration data is needed.  Thanks.

KB4457136 is not showing up when I synch WSUS.  Updates released before and after are though.  No errors.  I still see the update in the Microsoft Catalog, but is it no longer available for WSUS?

WSUS bandwith problem

We have a bandwidth issue here at work and we cannot download updates during the day. How can I force my WSUS server to download the updates when we are not here?

As soon as I approve updates, the server immediately starts to download the updates, and this cannot happen.

What I try to understand is, if I still do not design the gpo that specifies in the workstations when the updates should be downloaded, why is it that when the updates are just approved they are downloaded to the pcs generating these inconveniences in the bandwidth?

In our company we have branches with small links, and it is important to be able to make sure that the download of patches is outside of working hours.

Thankful for your time and your answer.

I currently have a WSUS 3.0 environment running on Server 2008 R2. I am standing up a new 2012 server that will run WSUS but will be 4.0. Can I have that sync with the 3.0 upstream server? This is all within an SCCM environment if that matters.

Move WSUS from Win2008R2 to Win2012R2 without full migration

I am fairly new to network admin and very new to WSUS, so I apologize if I'm asking an old/easy question, but I couldn't find it answered in the forum. I have a Win2008R2 server with WSUS for our domain that has a small 500gb hdd and cannot increase size. Naturally, I have space issues with content folder never having over 5mb. I frequently reset it, but doesn't really help, just fills back up and most of my updates will not sync, so they have to pull them from the internet which defeats the purpose. I have a fresh server with 6tb avail as the content drive. Can I just turn off the old Win2008R2 WSUS services and uninstall it, then install the new WSUS on Win2012R2 and edit the GPO? With the FQDN changed in the GPO, won't the clients all now sync with the new instance? What I've found online says you don't have to do a full-on migration, but don't really give good info on how to do it properly or if there are client changes needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

I'm running 2 Server 2012 virtual machines (one with WSUS), and 2 Windows 7 virtual machines. All machines are joined to the same domain (acme.local) and I'm trying to configure WSUS, but for some reason it can't detect any of the Windows 7 machines, even when I change the status in WSUS to any. How do I solve this?

Hi,

I have WSUS installed hosted on Windows server 2012 R2.

All Windows 10 clients are failing to install this update, and it seems that it is not only me that I encounter this problem(I saw some technet post).

Is there anyone out there can confirm if it is possible installing feature update 1803 through WSUS?

Thanks,

Stephen

Externally Facing WSUS Server - Best Practice

HI

We have an internal WSUS server working fine, we have external clients that we now need to get update on WSUS.

I understand we can have an externally facing WSUS server and purchase an SSL certificate for the url etc etc.

My question is what is the best practice for this. Do i

*Have a separate WSUS server in my DMZ setup as a replica server (does it have its on update DB or use the other servers)

*Move my existing WSUS server into my DMZ and make one server for all

Thanks in advanced

Fresh 2012 r2 server with WSUS installed. No clients checking in

Hi,

I just built a fresh 2012 R2 server to replace my 2k3 WSUS box.

It's up and running and all looks well, except no clients are checking in. (It's been 2 days)

GPO's from the old setup has not been changed. Did something change in the newer versions?

Any thoughts?

Task Scheduler and WSUS

Hi All,

We have issues with updates over the WAN continuously causing no end of user problems and complaints with slowness while a sync between Downstream and Upstream servers is in progress.

I have amended the Synchronization Schedule on the WSUS console to First Synchronize at 18:30 outside the working day. I have set Synchronizations for 10 a day but unsure when they will start and finish? I suspect they will run every two hours for a 24 hour period after 18:30?

My questions is can Task scheduler be used as an alternative if so does anyone know the exe file that kicks of a synchronization within WSUS and where that resides?

Regards.

Peter.

Windows Patch installation getting failed on Windows 2016 sevrer

Hi,

I'm using WSUS server (2016) to install windows patches. I'm facing bit strange issue and PFB details.

Issue-  Aug2018 (KB4343887 & KB43438814) patch is not getting installed in few (16 out of 50)  windows 2016 standard edition servers. All these servers are in same network. Last patch success is June cumulative patch on these servers

  • Patch getting detected in clients and installing 100%. While rebooting sever, its undoing the patches.
  • I've tried to install manually and same issue. I've disabled local windows firewall and disabled Antivirus alsoe. still no luck.
  • I've deregister and re-register the patch server & renamed SoftwareDistribution folder also. Still no luck.
  • I've made  bits, cryptsvc, trustedinstaller services automatic and no luck.

We have done the patching in 3 slots. Slot-1 -- 10 server (100% Success), Slot-2 -- 15 servers (1 server failed) and slot-3 on Aug 30th -- 25 servers (16 failed).

I've attached error screenshots.  Please assist me to resolve the issue. Is it failing because any dependent (MAY18 patch is already installed in that sevrers) patch missing or on AUG 30th new patch got release, due to this..?
